bresson-expression

September 20, 2024

What I’m looking for is not expression by gestures, by speech, by mimicry, but rather expression by way of the rhythm and combination of images, their position, relation, and number. The value of an image must be, above all, an exchange value. But to make this exchange possible, the images have to share something in common, to participate in a sort of union. This is why I make it a priority to give my characters a kind of kinship, why I ask all of my actors to speak in a certain way.
