sorrentino-ideas

I cannot believe that the expression of one’s ideas has anything to do with the making of literature. I don’t believe that ideas are a novelist’s problem. Ideas should be left to the people who have ideas — philosophers, politicians, teachers. Artists can be extremely dull in terms of what they believe, what they say, and what they do in their lives. Writers don’t think.

Thought:

“Miss Brontë & Miss Emily & Miss Anne used to put away their sewing after prayers, and walk all three one after the other round the table in the parlour till nearly eleven o’clock. Miss Emily walked as long as she could, and when she died Miss Anne & Miss Brontë took it up – and now my heart aches to hear Miss Brontë walking, walking on alone.”
