de-vere-epigram

October 17, 2024

Were I a king, I could command content;

Were I obscure, hidden should be my cares;

Or were I dead, no cares should me torment,

Nor hopes, nor hates, nor loves, nor griefs, nor fears.

A doubtful choice, of these three which to crave,

A kingdom, or a cottage, or a grave.

Thought:

“‘Dost that hear my horse’s feet, as he canters away?
Property! Property! Property! that’s what they seem to say!’

Do you hear my Rolls Royce purr, as it glides away?
—I lick the cream off property! that’s what it seems to say!”
