de-vere-epigram

Were I a king, I could command content;

Were I obscure, hidden should be my cares;

Or were I dead, no cares should me torment,

Nor hopes, nor hates, nor loves, nor griefs, nor fears.

A doubtful choice, of these three which to crave,

A kingdom, or a cottage, or a grave.

Thought:

“Everything about me is a contradiction, and so is everything about everybody else. We are made out of oppositions; we live between two poles. There’s a philistine and an aesthete in all of us, and a murderer and a saint. You don’t reconcile the poles. You just recognize them.”
