Harmonie du soir

August 19, 2026

Nina Danino asked if I’d be interested in contributing music to her new film Venice. That collaboration took a hundred twists and turns from blues rock to EDM, and now one possible version is available for you to hear.

In this version of the track, Nina reads Baudelaire’s “Harmonie du soir” from Les Fleurs du mal over a pulsing techno beat inspired by Thomas Bangalter’s music for the films of Gaspar Noé. Does that make me the Ali Akbar Khan in this situation?

Nina and I met at Goldsmiths’ Religion & Art + the subjective where Strophische Gedichten premiered and we shared a panel on medieval women mystics. If all goes well we should have more to announce very soon…

Thought:

“People often ask me: ‘Can you hear what you write? Are you surprised by what you write?’ The thing that surprises me is never the sound — I’m not a sound composer, I don’t go for special effects like that — what surprises me is how the piece speaks, how it unfolds and tells its story. That’s always a surprise.”
