Joe’s new single “Near Death,” featuring a video I made for him, is out now.

The song references Joe and Izabella’s near-accident involving two semis and a shattered windshield while driving in Montana last year. Joe tasked me with trying to evoke the experience of a car crash, while for my part I tried to draw on the melted memoryscapes of Phil Solomon and Paul Clipson. I’ve been trying to work toward some kind of poetics of digital filmmaking focusing on the materiality (for lack of a better term) of the medium — I have no idea whether this piece fits into that sort of conception but maybe I’ll try to write something more in depth down the line.

Thought:

“Words mean things. When you put them together they speak. Yes, sometimes they flatten out and nothing they say is real, and that is one kind of magic. But sometimes a vision will rip up from them and shriek and clank wings clear as the sweat smudge on the paper under your thumb. And that is another kind.”
