Vanity Sounds the Horn

June 28, 2024

The last Those Darn Gnomes album, Calling Whitetails to a Tuned Bow, turns five years old today.

Like everything Those Darn Gnomes did, recording and releasing this album was a long, bizarre and sometimes brutal trip. We were forever trying to accomplish something new in our recordings and performances and in a lot of ways this particular record feels to me like our creative zenith, if only because it proved we couldn’t sustain it and we split up almost immediately after.

If you’re reading this the chances are good we met somehow through this band so thanks for ten years of Music As A Contact Sport. I don’t have the words to thank my forever bandmate Russell, Greg Meisenberg and Nefarious Industries for taking a chance on this album, Robert Khasho for designing the album art (and Sam Hinsvark for doing all of our layouts) and the hundreds of others who joined the ride somewhere along the way. If we ever beat the shit out of each other on a dirty bar floor you will forever have a place in my heart 💙

Thought:

“When you see the films of certain young directors, you get the impression that film history begins for them around 1980. Their films would probably be better if they’d seen a few more films, which runs counter to this idiotic theory that you run the risk of being influenced if you see too much. Actually, it’s when you see too little that you run the risk of being influenced. If you see a lot, you can choose the films you want to be influenced by.”
